4 Hour Work Week

How would you like to work only 4 hours a week? Sounds great doesn't it? That’s the promise of a new book called The 4 Hour Work Week and it’s selling like hot cakes. It’s not surprising when a recent survey stated that 87% people don’t like their jobs. Only four hours a week sounds like a dream come true.

But I have a different take on this. I don’t believe the goal should be to only work 4 hours a week. Rather we should find a job, business or career where we don’t want to stop working.

It’s not about only working 4 hours a week. It’s about doing what you love so much that you don’t want to go to bed and you can’t wait to wake up in the morning. It’s about engaging in work that taps your purpose, passion and enthusiasm.

Instead of asking “How can I only work 4 hours a week” we should be asking ourselves “what kind of work would make me eliminate the word “retirement” from my vocabulary?”

Our thoughts should not be on working less but working with more spirit and energy. Far too many of us are simply in the wrong jobs. I know I was. That’s why I love the strengths movement that helps organizations match their employee’s strengths with the right jobs. Many of us don’t need to leave our current employer; we just need to find the right job within our organization.

On the other hand some of us may need to leave our jobs in order to utilize our strengths and do what energizes us most. I don’t mind saying this even though many organizations share this newsletter with their employees because if you are not energized by your job then you are doing yourself and your organization a disservice.

Individuals are at their best when they are doing what energizes them and organizations are at their best when they have the right people "on the bus," in the right positions, and who are energized by their jobs.

Let us stop fantasizing about only working 4 hours a week. Instead let us do what energizes us and do it forever.

The Power of Relationships

Here's a tip from my friend, business relationship guru Keith Ferrazzi:

"While there's no substitute for a warm smile, firm handshake and
face-to-face conversation, social networking sites such as Facebook can be useful tools for building relationships. They are great for finding and reconnecting with friends - and they give you easy access to all their friends. The sites can also be direct leads for business deals and new hires. An old friend recently e-mailed me on Facebook just when I needed help and now we are working on an exciting small project together. Social networking sites can also serve as valuable research tools. Profiles have photos and list job history, activities, favorite things, etc. I always advocate doing your homework before meeting new people, and what a great way to figure out personal holiday presents for clients and co-workers. If you want to know what music I'm listening to, find out what workout places I recommend and see some recent photos of me with a certain presidential candidate, please check out my profile on Facebook. Once you have a profile, type my name into the search box and then add me as your friend. Let's connect!"
