Do the Right Thing
Words are powerful. They can uplift and inspire or they can demoralize and drain. But even more powerful is the intention and power behind the words we say and the actions we take after we say them.
People often ask me, “How can I become a more powerful leader?” I always respond with the same. Speak the truth and follow through with your actions. Live with integrity and do the things you say you are going to do. Truth is power and when you speak it and live it you embody this power and share it with others.
I experienced this first hand last week at a JP Morgan Chase Mortgage meeting. The Senior Executive for Retail Home Lending, Pablo Sanchez was speaking before I spoke and what he said was extremely impressive and music to my ears. He said,
“As everyone knows these are challenging times in the mortgage industry and as leaders we need to give you, the managers, tools to be successful during these tough times and we are working on that at the highest levels of the company and within a week you will have the tools you need. But also know that we will not be resorting to any gimmicks. We will not lessen our standards. We will not do anything to hurt you, the customer or the company. We will do the right thing. We will take the right road and the high road. We will continue to develop loyal relationships with our customers and if we serve them and continue to outreach and share our strengths we will be successful and thrive.”
I looked around the room and there was no doubt that everyone was on his bus. He spoke the truth and you knew that he, the company and the managers were all going to do the right thing.
I also knew that they would be successful because when you LEAD WITH THE TRUTH SUCCESS FOLLOWS.
Too often when we are faced with a crisis and hard times it causes us, out of fear, to go into survival mode and take less than desirable actions. We look for shortcuts, gimmicks, quick fixes and this only generates weak energy. We must remember that the farther we move away from truth and integrity the weaker we and our actions become.
There are a set of principles and truths that lead to success regardless of market conditions. If you align your thoughts and actions with these principles and live and work with these truths you and your business will thrive through the worst and best of times.
