Feed the Positive Dog
If you have read The Energy Bus or heard me speak you know I talk about the importance of cultivating positive energy in our own lives on a daily basis so we have more energy for ourselves and more for our family, co-workers and customers. After all, if you don’t have the energy you can’t share it.
To illustrate this point I share a simple story about a man who travels to the village to speak to the wise man. He says to the wise man, “I feel like there are two dogs inside me. One dog is positive, loving, kind and enthusiastic and then I have this mean spirited, angry, jealous and negative dog and they fight all the time. I don’t know who is going to win." The wise man thinks for a moment and responds, “I know who is going to win. The one you feed the most. So feed the positive dog.”
The fact is, we all have a positive and negative dog inside of us. It’s part of our human nature. The key is to feed the positive dog and starve the negative dog. The more we feed the positive dog the bigger it gets and the stronger it becomes.
Each day we must make a conscious choice to feed ourselves with positive energy rather than negativity. The actions are simple. We just need to make them a habit and integrate them into who we are and what we do. Here are a few ways to feed the positive dog.
- Smile - It enhances your serotonin levels making you feel happier.
- Practice Gratitude - You can't be stressed and thankful at the same time.
- Listen to Your Favorite Music - It energizes you.
- Think of your greatest moment whenever you are feeling down.
- Share and listen to success stories with your co-workers and family.
- Get together with a positive, uplifting person.
- Call someone who has made a difference in your life and thank them.
- Read uplifting books. I just read Tony Dungy’s book Quiet Strength and it energized me.
- Take a walk of prayer each morning. I do this and it feeds me all day long.
- Listen to inspirational CD’s.
As you reviewed this list I’m sure you thought of a few things you can do immediately. We’ll, now just pick one and take action today. You’ll be amazed at how it causes you to think and feel differently. Your positive dog is ready for some positive nourishment. Now you just have to feed it. Enjoy!
